We came into this world on Wednesday, February 28, 2007. I (Grace) was born at 11:16am. And I (Avery) was born at 11:17 am. We kind of arrived a little early so we lived in this place called the NICU for 5 weeks. Grace came home on Tuesday, April 3rd and Avery came home on Friday April 6th. What a whirlwind it was. Grace weighed in at 3lbs. 2oz. at birth. Avery tipped the scales at 3lbs. 6oz. When we came home we were about 5lbs. Pretty good considering we had to learn to eat and breathe at the same time. Sometimes we forgot to breathe because we were so hungry and really wanted to eat. But these loud buzzers would go off and scare everyone! Mommy, Daddy, or the nurse would then rub our chests really hard and pat us on the back. It was like, "OH! I really have to breathe too?" But we eventually got the hang of it.
When we came home we had to eat every 3 hours. Mommy and Daddy were really put to the test during all of this. Our Mommy would stay awake in the evening. She would make bottles and do laundry for the next day while we slept. Then around 11pm she would feed us. It usually took about 1 1/2 hours to feed the both of us and then we would go back to sleep. Our Daddy, meanwhile, would go to sleep around 8pm and sleep until we woke up in the middle of the night and feed us. This usually happened around 4 am. So, at least they were getting a few hours of straight sleep.
We changed clothes all the time. You could call us the fashion divas. But really we spit up a lot and usually our clothes just got dirty and we had to change. We had what the doctor calls "Acid Reflux." Let us just tell you, IT IS NOT FUN! It made our insides hurt! We had to take a lot of medicine for it all day long.
All in all, it was a rough start but all four of us got through it. Yeah for The Macha's!
